Masters Field Beginning To Take Shape

February 20, 2007

Are we looking at a Tiger Woods Phil Mickleson face off, or will someone like Charles Howell creep into the picture to capture his first green jacket? As we approach the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta Georgia (tickets available through this link) scheduled for April 5-8, players will be sharpening their skills over the next few weeks to prepare for the demands of Augusta.

Tiger Woods is in search of his 8th straight PGA Tour event this week as he faces the Accenture World Match Play held at The Gallery Golf Club in Arizona. Many of the top players in the world will be present including Phil Mickleson, Charles Howell III, Vijay Singh and Ernie Els. His task will be great, but his skills rank him as the tournaments favorite. Phil will be looking to rebound after his loss at the Nissan Open held last week at Rivierra Country Club in Los Angeles. Phil's driving had been excellent through most of the tournament, but the long stick let him down over the last 3 holes and then again in the playoff when he missed the fairway left. Were memories of Wingfield Golf Club and the US Open of 2006 in his head as he came down the stretch? Stay tuned. I would think his performance at this weeks tournament will be a good indication of how he will do in the first major of the year. Among the many in the field is the irishman, Padraig Harrington. European golfers do well in match play events and seem to enjoy the format. Paddy played well enough to win Sunday and has a good draw this weekend. He's my pick to be the winner.

February Golf Lesson

Last month we discussed why the ball travels in certain directions and what the causes may be. These principles are things I call “The Laws of Ball Flight”. If you need to review, just scroll down to the bottom of this page and then come back later. Swing path and Face Angles are keys reasons for off-line shots. The first thing you have to identify is whether you have a path issue, a face angle issue or both. Once identified, we can move forward to hopefully working toward a correction. Let’s use this time to work on path issues.

Path- If your swing path seems to be the reason you’re not in the fairway or on the green, the first thing to examine is your alignment. You would be surprised at the number of people who think they are aimed straight down the fairway when they are actually aimed well right or left of their target. To check, lay a club down that touches your toes while you are at address. Step behind the ball looking down your target line. Are they parallel? They should be. If they aren’t, you know what needs to be corrected. If they are, do the same drill by holding a club across your thighs and shoulders, each time checking to see if the lines are parallel to your target. If one of these is off, realign to correct and try a few practice swings and then a few shots. If you are correctly aligned and the ball is still traveling straight right or left of target, do a physical assessment. What I mean is, do you have an injury that may prevent you from swinging down your target line? Once you have coiled into your backswing, if you have an ankle, knee, hip or shoulder ailment, or a flexibility problem, you may have found your reason. If that’s the case, you may want to consult your doctor so you don’t do any further damage. If the damage is there for good, consult your local PGA professional a take a lesson. They can show you ways to maximize your game with what you’ve got.

Perfectly healthy and still having issues? Try this. Find a wall in the garage or maybe a privacy fence outside (something that can take a few dings). Take your stance facing the wall as if you were going to hit a shot down the length of it. Reverse the club and take your grip just above the club head so the grip is just above the floor. Slowly take your backswing, get to the top and begin to swing down and through the imaginary ball all the way through to the top. Did you hit the wall at any point? Chances are, you did and it was probably just before the “ball”. Hopefully this will show you where the problem is and performing the drill will give you a feel of the swing necessary not to “hit the wall”. Take this to the range and use an old club or perhaps a club packaging box from your proshop to simulate the wall. Make sure your target line, the “wall” and stance lines are all parallel and try a few shots. Hopefully we’ve made some progress.

Teetickets.com Welcomes We-Ko-Pa Golf Club

Scottsdale, AZ- The words “Painted Desert” will immediately come to mind as you discover Teetickets.com newest member, We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. Located just a few miles from Scottsdale, Arizona, We-Ko-Pa’s two award winning 18 hole layouts are the perfect combination of natural desert beauty and modern golf architecture.

Located on land owned by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, We-Ko-Pa (Yavapai for “Four Peaks”) is routed through unspoiled Sonoran desert, free from residential or commercial real estate development. In fact, there is not even an out-of-bounds stake to be found on these pristine courses where endless mountain vistas provide the backdrop.

Open since December 2001, the Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa has garnered countless honors and has quickly become recognized as the reference course for quintessential desert golf. The Saguaro Course is a Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw design and has quickly become one of the most sought after destinations for Scottsdale golfers. Golf Magazine added Saguaro to its “Top 10 Best New Courses You Can Play” list earlier this month.

We-Ko-Pa Golf Club’s two magnificent courses are complimented by a 21,000 square foot clubhouse that features a golf shop named three consecutive years as one of “’s 100 Best” by Golfworld Business magazine as well as a full service restaurant serving breakfast or lunch indoors or on the spacious patio.

Harbour Town and The Ocean Course Now on Teetickets.com

Myrtle Beach, SC- Two of the finest golf facilities in the country can now be found on Teetickets.com. Harbour Town Golf Links and The Ocean Course, both residing at The Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island South Carolina, can be easily found either through a Hilton Head Quick Link on the Home Page or through a Quick Search of the Hilton Head Island market.

Harbour Town, home of the PGA Tour's Verizon Heritage Classic, is the jewel of the 5,000-acre Sea Pines Resort, situated on a peninsula of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Calibogue Sound at Hilton Head’s southern tip. Suffice it to say that the candy-striped lighthouse, standing sentinel behind Harbour Town’s 18th green — truly one of the most recognizable symbols in the golf universe — has unusual meaning. Though it looks to be the real deal, it’s never been a guiding light for seafarers. Built in concert with the golf course in 1969, it’s no beacon for sailors, but instead beckons golfers the world over, tempting them to test their skills on one of the world’s most famous and best-loved designs. This Pete Dye-Jack Nicklaus collaborative effort debuted in 1969, just in time for a nascent PGA Tour event called the Heritage Classic to be staged. Harbour Town continues to attract accolades and recognition throughout the golf world. Among many other distinctions, it’s ranked No. 67 in GOLF Magazine’s list of the top 100 courses in the world. It’s also scored a unique “triple crown” with Golfweek. The magazine ranks Harbour Town No. 25 in its list of America’s Top 100 Modern Courses, the No. 12 resort course in the nation, and No. 2 overall in terms of public access courses in the state of South Carolina.

Built in 1962 by prolific architect George Cobb, The Ocean Course offers a true rarity on Hilton Head Island — an actual surfside golf hole. The 210-yard, par-3 15th necessitates an uphill shot, usually in swirling winds, to reach a well fortified green. Just steps behind the putting surface are a wide expanse of beach and the majesty of the Atlantic Ocean. Not even Harbour Town itself can offer such an inspiring view. Mark McCumber, a 10-time PGA Tour winner who also happens to be a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, redesigned the original in 1995, with an emphasis on traditional and classic principles of design. An eye-pleasing and not-overly-intimidating combination of lagoons, bunkers and fairway contouring creates a contemporary 6,906-yard course that has been awarded the “Beginner Friendly” Certification from the National Golf Course Owners Association.

Footjoy’s Golf Shoe Breakthrough

Catch a glimpse of Davis Love III from the ankles down and you’ll see Footjoy’s latest addition. The introduction of the Footjoy ReelFit golf shoe came toward the end of the 2006 season and was an immediate hit on the PGA Tour.

FootJoy accounted for over 65% of players on the 2006 PGA Tour. Players lacing up FJs in 2006 also amassed 20 PGA Tour victories. Both of these totals were more than any other golf shoe company.

The ReelFit shoe features Boa Technology, a system where traditional laces are replaced by stainless steel cables and a heel mounted reel. The slogan “Embrace Technology and sometimes it embraces you back” has never been more fitting than with is this revolutionary product. Footjoy products can be found at Prestwick Golf Club in Myrtle Beach, SC, Cheyenne Shadows in Fort Carson, CO, Brook Hollow Golf Club in Dallas TX or by visiting the Footjoy website and finding a local dealer near you.

New Face in the 18th Tower at Augusta

January 8, 2007

Myrtle Beach, SC- Nick Faldo, holder of 3 green jackets, will pass on playing in the 2007 Masters Golf Tournament and spend his time as an analyst for CBS Sports. He replaces Lanny Watkins and will sit second chair to Jim Nantz.

Faldo has spent the past 2 years as an analyst with ABC alongside Mike Tirrico and Paul Azinger. He feels comfortable in his new role off the course and outside the ropes. Faldo in a recent interview commented on when he knew his time had come at Augusta National Golf Club. “I stood just off the ninth fairway in the rough with a three-iron in my hand going: ‘I can’t hit it on the green, there’s no way I can get this damn thing on the green’,” he recalled. “I had giant bunkers up the left and knew, even if I hit it on the green, it would repel and bounce off. “So I thought: ‘Okay it’s getting tough now and I haven’t got the game to seriously compete at Augusta any more.’

Faldo continues, “I don’t want to be a player who’s an amateur,” Faldo added. “I’m now an analyst and I will be in the tower at Augusta for the whole week.

Faldo will continue to play on and off the tour in preparation for his role as the European Ryder Cup Captain in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, from September 19 to 21.

Chicago Golf in January…It’s True

January 9, 2007

Myrtle Beach, SC- Strange but true. The unusually warm winter weather has allowed many North East and Mid West golf courses to open for play during months when they would normally be covered in snow.

Golfers in St. Paul Minnesota, Grand Rapids Michigan, Baltimore Maryland and Philadelphia Pennsylvania are still making tee times at their favorite area golf courses and will continue to do so provided the weather is warm enough. At the Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago Illinois near Lake Michigan, 30 people teed off between 9 a.m. and noon, when there are usually no golfers at all this time of year.

The unusual weather pattern is said to be a result of El Nino, a cyclical warming trend now under way in the Pacific Ocean. This pattern can lead to milder weather, particularly in the Northeast. Another trend is the jet stream which is running much farther north than usual over the East Coast.

Tiger and Phil Say Aloha to Mercedes

January 4, 2007

Myrtle Beach, SC- Tiger Woods and Phil Mickleson have again opted to stay on the mainland rather than board their private jets and fly to dreary old Hawaii for the Mercedes Championships played on the Plantation Golf Course at Kapalua Resort on Maui.

This marks the second year that Woods has elected not to play. He and his wife Elin Woods are expecting their first child and Tiger’s not really hurting for cash these days. Phil hasn’t played since 2001 and probably won’t until Kapalua figures out a way to create snow that doesn’t melt in 80 degree temps so Phil can ski after each round. Stuart Appleby and the rest of the field probably won’t mind the decision. I think the field wishes that it was Stuart who was staying home since he’s won the event 3 years in a row.

As you tune in for the final round Sunday of the Mercedes Benz Championship kicked back in your lazy boy with a cold beverage in one hand and a bag of chips in your lap, know that you are in good company. Phil and Tiger are right there with you.

What do you think of their decision not to play? Email us at support@teetickets.com

New Air Service Coming Soon for Myrtle Beach Golfers

January 3, 2007

Myrtle Beach, SC- Golfers longing for a quick way to travel to Myrtle Beach for their golf vacation will soon have an affordable option. Myrtle Beach Direct Air will begin charter flights to Myrtle Beach starting March 7, 2007 from Pittsburgh, Newark, NJ and Niagara Falls, NY. Following Myrtle Beach Direct Air will be Southern Skyways who will begin service to Cincinnati, Charleston WVA and Allentown, PA.

Myrtle Beach Direct Air founder Ed Warneck feels he is in the right place at the right time, coming to a market filled with demand for affordable air travel. Mr. Warneck’s company will have a tough road ahead in a seasonal market. Many have tried to provide Myrtle Beach golfers access, but have folded soon after opening. The most recent casualties have been Hooter’s Air, Jet Express and Air Tran.

Warneck feels the secret to the success of Myrtle Beach Direct Air will be outbound flights from Myrtle Beach’s Grand Strand Airport. Planes coming to Myrtle Beach are always full of golfers scheduled to play on such courses as The International Club, Caledonia, TPC of Myrtle Beach, Grande Dunes and Sea Trail. Mr. Warneck feels that the trick is having the planes full when they leave.

January Golf Lesson

This month’s segment: How did it get over there?

Picture this (right handed golfer)….you’re on the tee and are ready to hit your drive right down the middle of the fairway. You address the ball, take one last look and swing. CRACK…perfect contact! Your head comes up expecting to see a straight drive only to find your golf ball is slicing toward the woods on the right side. Sound familiar? This month’s golf lesson will hopefully explain to you what happens to create a slice and a hook so you can work on correcting it. If you have a better understanding of the Laws of Ball Flight, sometimes it’s easier to fix.

The easiest way I know to teach this is that the ball most always starts in the direction that the club was traveling (swing path) and finishes where the face was pointing at impact (face angle). Let’s examine that ball that you thought was perfect and ended up taking out 5 tree limbs and 3 squirrels. If it started out flying right down the middle of the fairway, your swing path was excellent and you swung down your target line. The problem is face angle. At impact, your clubface is open imparting left to right side spin which causes a slice. Take a look at your grip. Do you need to improve or change it? Maybe the clubs you are swinging are too heavy, not allowing you to close the face. The same is true for a shot that goes to the left; the face is closed at impact. Shots that just go left or right with no slice or hook spin, you’ve got a path issue. We could go on and on, but the important part is understanding the cause of the problem. And to all our leftie friends, just take everything I’ve said and hold it against the mirror as the opposite is true.

Next month we’ll try and fix these problems with some very basic drills that you can make with things around the house…..so if you got a really expensive swing trainer for Christmas, check to see if you still have the receipt !J
